6th Annual
Community Chest Challenge
A Team Triathlon Fundraiser
for Athletes of All Abilities

To benefit human service organizations of Concord, Carlisle and Maynard

Sunday, June 1, 2008
8:00 A.M.
Concord, Massachusetts

Start and Finish at Old Manse

Join us for the 6th annual Community Chest Challenge. Teams will pedal, run and paddle through historic Concord and Carlisle to benefit local human service organizations. The spirit of the race is meeting a challenge through teamwork as demonstrated by the work of the many agencies and programs supported by the Community Chest and United Way organizations in the area. This year, we are delighted to include teams sponsored by the Maynard Community Chest.

The CC Challenge is a mix of triathlon and team relay. You can have between two and six members on your team with two people competing in each leg. Two individuals can bike, run and paddle or up to six people can split the legs among themselves.

All participants are treated to post-race refreshments and receive a Challenge hat, discount coupons and other giveaways.

Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories including;
Top fundraiser, most spirited and fastest time for women, men, seniors and youth.

To Register

To make the registration process as simple as possible, we ask that participants register as a team. Captains can register their teams online or by printing and returning the attached team rooster and registration form.

MAYNARD TEAMS AND DONORS: PLEASE REGISTER AND MAKE DONATIONS THROUGH THE MAYNARD COMMUNITY CHEST at www.maynardchest.org/challenge.html

If you want to join a team, let us know by registering as an individual and we will match you with other participants.

A minimum team contribution of $600 is due June 1, 2008.

To Donate

All teams are encouraged to fundraise above the $600 minimum requirement to maximize funds available for local human service organizations. One way to make this process easy is to email friends and family members and ask them to make a donation in any amount to your team. Include this link in your email:

Personal checks are also accepted for registration and donations. Please mail by June 1 to:

To Volunteer

We will need many volunteers on the day of the event. Your friends and family will have a great time cheering you on while helping at the start or finish and along the route. Volunteers should call the Community Chest at 978-369-5250 or send email to info@cccommunitychest.org

The Rules

Start Right
It is imperative that you arrive on time on Sunday morning, so we can start on time. Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. behind the Old Manse. All participants should be checked-in and ready for pre-race instructions at 7:45. The race will begin precisely at 8 a.m.

Be Safe
Safety is our number one priority. Some of you will really want to win, others will be happy to finish. But winning can not come at the expense of a fellow participant. We are all in this together to compete, to have fun, to do our best, to support local need through the Community Chest. Any participant who exhibits unsafe behavior will be disqualified. Cyclists must wear helmets, runners must look both ways before crossing a busy street, paddlers must wear life vests and everyone must come with a sense of humor.

Weather or Not
We go rain or shine. If we are facing a storm of epic proportions we will contact you via email or you can call or check our website for instructions. Those of you who survived a past deluge know that canceling is not really an option.

The Bike – 11.7 miles
Buttrick Estate Loop to Carlisle Center

You must stay to the right, ride single file, and obey all traffic regulations. When passing, alert those in front by calling out “on your left.” If you are not experienced riding a pace line, maintain at least a couple of bike lengths between you and the bike in front. Mile markers listed below are approximate.

Your team won’t win the race on your bike, but you could lose it. If you crash, it will hurt and you could end up at the back of the pack. If you fall or have an equipment failure that makes it impossible for you to complete the bike course, our sag vehicle will pick you up and take you to the Old Manse. Cyclists who do not finish on their own will transition to the run after all other cyclists have arrived.

Liberty Street will be blocked off at the start, so we can use both lanes (this is the one time you can break riding rules). Throughout this early stage moderation is the best strategy. After a short hill you’ll take the first right on Estabrook Road. Get ready to pick up the pace down the hill. Now, be prepared to stop or slow way down at the corner of Lowell Road (1.3 mi). There will be a police officer, but look all ways before taking a right.

It’s clear sailing until Carlisle Center (5.8 mi). At the rotary bear to the right onto Bedford Road (Route 225 East). There should be a police officer and race volunteer helping direct traffic. Unfortunately, Kimball’s Ice Cream will not be open. This is a good time to relax and get ready for the hilly section to come. Keep on pedaling until you reach a fork in the road (7.6 mi). Leave Route 225 and take the right up River Street (becomes Monument in Concord).

From here on the road is narrow with hills. Keep single file, signal when passing, and alert fellow riders about approaching cars with calls of "car back." The steepest hill goes over Punketasset (10.3 mi). Take in the view if you can. It’s all down hill from here Bear right at the fork onto Liberty Street (watch for oncoming traffic) to the finish. Stop along the road to make the transition to the run. We have volunteers who will take good care of your bike.

Pat your self on the back and chill out until the canoes arrive in an hour or so--that is unless you are doing the run in which case you’d better get cracking.

The Run – 3 Miles.
Buttrick Estate to South Bridge Boat House

After leaving the bicycle transition area, runners immediately turn left onto Liberty Street, then right onto Estabrook Road which becomes Barnes Hill Road. At the stop light, turn left onto Lowell Road (use caution crossing the street), then right onto Keyes Road. At Main Street, turn right and continue until you reach the South Bridge Boat House on your right where your team will transition for the canoe race. (Use caution crossing Elm Street.)

If you arrive at the boat dock before your teammate, please step aside and wait for your team member to arrive. Runners not canoeing will be transported back to the start.

Canoe – 2 miles
South Bridge to North Bridge

Paddlers who are not running will be transported to the South Bridge Boathouse. Transition will take place along the road above the dock. Both team runners must arrive before canoeists put on their life vest and select their paddles. The South Bridge Boat House will provide all equipment.

There is absolutely no running on any portion of the dock. As canoes are launched, teams will board in the order in which they arrive.

Paddlers must be seated at all times. Bumping another canoe or touching with a paddle could results in disqualification.

While the Sudbury and Concord rivers are far from raging streams, there are hazards along the way. Be on the lookout for underwater rocks or limbs. If the water is high they will tend to be along the shore, if the water is low then tend to be hidden in the middle. You will pass under four bridges. The first is the narrowest, but caution should be exercised under all of them, especially when passing. The greatest hazard will likely be your fellow canoeists. You mush remain seated or kneeling at all times and bumping another canoe or pushing it with a paddle could result in disqualification.

The finish line is the North Bridge but we ask canoeists to turn around after the bridge and bring the boats to the dry dock at the Old Manse.  Prizes and refreshments will be given on the lawn of the Old Manse after everyone finishes the race.
